English 125 April, 2nd, 2012 Synthesis essay Today we live in a society that is often called a salad bowl. It is called a salad bowl because it consists of various different people from various different backgrounds. We all live together in a society, but we still retain our own distinct flavors which helps to contribute to the richness and diversity of society. Unfortunately, today we also live in a society in which some of these groups are marginalized and looked down upon by others. Hence, often times as individuals we feel the need to compromise the way in which we communicate our ideas so that we can appeal to the views of the majority. Two authors explore how their attempt to compromise almost caused them to becomeÃ¢â¬ ¦show more contentÃ¢â¬ ¦Since her mother expressed her words in an imperfect manner, tan believed that her thoughts were also imperfect (Tan 274). Her perception was also supported by how people in society responded to her mother. Tan states that people in department stores, banks, and restaurants would not take her mother seriously. They would provide her bad service, pretend not to understand her, or act as if they were mute (Tan 274). This further contributed to Tans feeling of embarrassment and shame towards her mother. Tan also describes an incident in which her mother went to the hospital and was told that the hospital had misplaced her CAT scan. The hospital did not show any remorse for losing the scan, nor did they assure her that they would locate it, that is until her mother had Tan speak to the hospital (Tan 275). As a reader this shows us how language is perceived and the role that it plays in the lives of individuals. For Tan it was imperative that she was able to blend in and be like others, so that she wouldnt be ridiculed. Luckily, she was able to realize the positive influence that her mothers diction bought her. Furthermore, Tans mother teaches her to think in a different manner than the other children in her school. Introduction In the modern era of medicine, doctors have been making discoveries about how nutrition affects our mental health. They are making connections between the diet of an adolescent and how it affects their moods. Settling the Rio Grande Valley The Rio Grande Valley consists of the southern most part of Texas, along the Texas/Mexico border. The population growth in this area was very slow until the 1900Ã¢â¬â¢s, when it began to skyrocket. From 1920 to 1930, the population in the Valley more than doubled. The St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico railroads all were completed in 1904. This furthered the expansion of the already popular method of irrigation farming in this area. The railroad system allowed for commercial production of different fruits and vegetables. Irrigation farming became extremely popular in this area and citrus orchards began popping up in this area. The farmers even discovered a tree that would thrive in the Valley climate. Irrigation farming became so successful that an amendment was added to the Texas constitution encouraging irrigation and drainage districts. Though it was becoming very popular, irrigation farming was far more expensive than the dry farming done in West Texas. It was almost impossible for small farmers to compete with the corporate farms and wealthy land owners. The large, corporate farms required extensive staff and therefore increased the population. The railroads continued to encourage population growth into the 20Ã¢â¬â¢s and 30Ã¢â¬â¢s by running excursion trains. These trains transported people, free of charge, from North Texas cities into South Texas. The passengers would often times buy land in South Texas and a single excursion could generate up to one million dollars in land sales. The economy continued to thrive and population continued to grow. Since most of the Valley consisted of large, corporate farms; the farmers relied on low paid laborers and the farms had their own cotton gins, stores, and employee housing. This created a wide gap between the wealthy and the poor, this gap was wider and more apparent than in other areas of the state because there were less small farmers to buffer the gap. Many of the low-wage laborers were African- American or Mexican-American. With that said, not only did rifts between classes become more evident, but also the racial tension became heavier. Earlier, Ã¢â¬Å"tradition and a relatively static social and political orderÃ¢â¬ made people more sympathetic with the Tejanos. But during the twentieth century, these wealthy land owners were far more unsympathetic to the Tejano traditions and culture than in earlier years. This made discrimination more rampant and people became more outspoken with their bigotry. There are many documented events, like the Brownsville Affair to shed light on the extreme racism. In 1906, a documented fight broke out between a black soldier at Fort Brown and a local merchant. Since the soldiers arrived at Ft. Brown, the black soldiers were subject to extreme hatred and racism. With this particular incident, shots were fired and a white man was killed. This just goes to show the intense division between the classes and the hatred that was shown between the two groups. The railroads, the newly popular irrigation system, and the high land sales all contributed to the population growth, but because the corporate farms dominated the area, racial tension was very prevalent. Miller Essay Art/MusicTopic: Using Music to Express Yourself Ages: 4-5Text/Materials Used:-Two white king sized sheets-Tempura Paint (eight different colors)-Soap -Water-Disney CD-Paint Pans-Dish Tubs filled with soapy water (eight)Behavioral Objectives:In this lesson, students ages four and five will express their feelings towards certain musical pieces by dancing, with paint on their feet, on a white sheet. The students will have colored paint on their feet to record heavy footsteps in accord to loud music and tip toe in accord to soft music. Because of having his/her own individual paint color, the creation will allow the students to distinguish their own feet as well as test their recognition of the pattern of footsteps matching up with certain songs. Students may also achieve satisfactory aggression release by participating in this activity. Procedures:First of all I need to set up. There will be eight paint tins filled with eight different colors of paint and a little bit of soap and water added (to make it easier to clean off of feet) one for each child. There will also be eight Dish Tubs filled with soapy water to allow the children to wash their feet off in after they are finished with the paints. I will put a Disney CD in the CD player (music most children will recognize) and let it play while the children start to come in for the day so they will become familiar with the songs. I will then talk about loud and soft music and ways to express it (show tip toeing and jumping as it pertains). I will explain that we are going to paint with our feet so that they can really see the difference between tip toeing and jumping. The children will then put their smocks on and wait for their paint. The students will step in their paint and I will put the CD back on and play two songs one soft, one loud. The students will then be told to act out what I just told them about when a quiet song comes on they can tip toe and when it becomes loud the can jump up and down. Students will be allowed to put more paint on their feet if they run low. The art/music dancing will last around ten minutes or longer depending how interested they stay in the project. We will then step into the Dish Tubs of water and wash our feet off. From there we will let the sheets dry and come back to it after lunch. When we are back we will look at the sheet and look at all of the individual footprintswe will discuss who was tip toeing and what song the steps went to and if it was loud or soft. I will also ask if it was a fun project and if they would like to do it again sometime. Evaluation:The students are already able to distinguish between loud and soft and know how to control themselves with paint. I believe that as long as everyone controls themselves and seem to stay focused for ten minutes of jumping then the lesson was good. We are not focused on making students get the point in one day, we want to introduce ideas and come back every now and then to enhance what we introduced. We also like to promote aggression release through activities rather than giving and opportunity to allow fighting.

Other popular words that get mistaken for their counterparts are Ã¢â¬Å"weatherÃ¢â¬ and Ã¢â¬Å"whetherÃ¢â¬ , Ã¢â¬Å"readÃ¢â¬ and Ã¢â¬Å"reedÃ¢â¬ , Ã¢â¬Å"acceptÃ¢â¬ and Ã¢â¬Å"exceptÃ¢â¬ Ã¢â¬â there are several dozen more. DonÃ¢â¬â¢t make this mistake in your formal essays. Your professor wonÃ¢â¬â¢t be impressed. 2. Basic Spelling The first time you read through your paper, you should catch the vast majority of these mistakes. Pay close attention to your spelling. Once homophone mistakes are eliminated, there should only be obvious spelling errors to catch. Since Microsoft Word and other processors usually catch these mistakes, you shouldnÃ¢â¬â¢t have an impossible job ahead of you. 3. Sentence Fragments YouÃ¢â¬â¢ll be able to edit this portion of your paper by reading it out loud. There are a variety sentences that, without another sentence prefacing them, couldnÃ¢â¬â¢t stand alone? Eliminate these phrases, or group them in with other sentences.
